Scalp Micropigmentation - FAQS

We get many questions about scalp micropigmentation from potential clients. We’ve tried to answer some of the most common ones below. For any further information please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Will it look natural?

Scalp micropigmentation treatment is classed as a permanent cosmetic procedure. Whilst results are permanent it is usual for the colour to fade over time. It’s important to take care of your treatment area to avoid premature fading. We will provide you with all the information you need for proper care and treatment to ensure longevity.

Isn’t a scalp micropigmentation just the same as a head tattoo?

Alopecia is a devastating autoimmune condition that causes the body to attack its own hair follicles. This results in extreme hair loss for the individual and a loss of self esteem. There are several forms of alopecia, such as Alopecia Arreata and Alopecia Universalis. SMP treatment can help to mask the signs of hair loss caused by alopecia, plus more. SMP treatment has helped thousands of people suffering from these conditions to feel more confident about the way they look. Whilst there is no cure for alopecia, SMP treatment can ease the visual implications of this form of hair loss.

SMP For Male Pattern Baldness

No. Whilst the process of scalp micropigmentation may appear quite similar to getting a tattoo, there are actually quite a few differences. Scalp micropigmentation is performed by a skilled technician. Our technicians have years of experience and have performed hundreds of treatments. They are experts at replicating the look of a natural shaved head. The process is also slightly different to that of a head tattoo. Not only is the pigment used totally different, but the needles are single-use, and are notably smaller than the standard tattooing needle.

Who will be performing my treatment?

Your treatment will be carried out by one of our certified practitioners. All our practitioners have many years experience so you can be sure you’re in safe hands.

How long will the treatment take?

A treatment session with SMP Nationwide takes an average of 2-3 hours.

How many sessions will I need?

All our SMP treatments are carried out over 3 separate sessions.

How long do I need to wait between sessions?

There is a minimum of a 10 day wait between sessions. This gives enough time for the scalp to heal.

How long does scalp micropigmentation last?

SMP is considered a permanent procedure; however, most clients enjoy results for 4–6 years before considering a touch-up. Over time, natural fading may occur, and maintenance sessions can refresh the look.

Is the procedure painful?

Discomfort levels vary from person to person, but most clients describe the sensation as mild to moderate. Our practitioners work carefully to ensure you remain as comfortable as possible throughout the process.

Will people be able to tell I’ve had SMP?

When performed by a skilled technician, SMP blends seamlessly with your natural hair follicles, creating a realistic appearance that most people will not detect.

Can I choose the hairline style?

Yes. During your consultation, we’ll work with you to design a hairline that suits your facial structure, age, and personal preference — whether you want a soft, natural look or a sharper, defined style.

Can SMP cover scars from hair transplants or injuries?

Absolutely. SMP can effectively camouflage scars, including those from FUE or FUT hair transplants, as well as accident or surgical scars on the scalp.

Is there any downtime after the treatment?

There is minimal downtime. You can resume most normal activities immediately, but we advise avoiding heavy sweating, swimming, and direct sun exposure for a few days.

How much does scalp micropigmentation cost?

Prices vary depending on the treatment area and the complexity of your case. We will provide you with a personalized quote after your consultation.

What aftercare is required?

After your SMP session, you’ll need to keep the area clean and avoid washing your scalp or applying products for the first few days. We’ll provide full aftercare instructions to ensure the best possible results.
